    Key benefits

The beta-glucans found in mushrooms are complex polysaccharides that have been shown to have potent immune-modulating effects. They can interact with immune cells, such as macrophages and natural killer cells, and activate their activity, promoting the body's natural defense against infection and illness.

Triterpenes are another group of compounds found in mushrooms that have been shown to have immune-stimulating effects. Triterpenes can stimulate the production of cytokines, which are important signaling molecules that help regulate the immune response.

Lion's Mane mushrooms have been shown to contain erinacines and hericenones, which have been shown to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF) production in the brain. NGF is a protein that is essential for the growth and survival of neurons, and plays an important role in maintaining cognitive function. By promoting the growth and survival of neurons, Lion's Mane mushrooms can help to improve cognitive function and memory.

Cordyceps mushrooms contain cordycepin and adenosine, which have been shown to have a positive impact on cognitive function and memory. These compounds are believed to work by increasing blood flow to the brain and enhancing oxygen uptake by the cells. In addition, they have been shown to have neuroprotective effects, which may help prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Overall, Lion's Mane and Cordyceps mushrooms can work synergistically to support cognitive function and memory. By promoting the growth and survival of neurons, and enhancing blood flow and oxygen uptake to the brain, these mushrooms may help improve cognitive performance and support long-term brain health. Additionally, other mushrooms like Chaga and Reishi contain compounds with neuroprotective effects that may further support cognitive function and help prevent age-related cognitive decline.

Cordyceps can increase energy and endurance is by increasing the production of ATP in the body. ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, is the primary source of cellular energy in the body, and is necessary for many biological processes. Cordyceps contain adenosine, which is a compound that is converted into ATP in the body. By increasing the production of ATP, cordyceps can help to improve energy levels, reduce fatigue, and increase endurance during physical activity. In addition to its effects on ATP production, cordyceps also contains other compounds that may help to improve energy and endurance, such as cordycepin, which has been shown to have anti-fatigue effects in animal studies.

Reishi and cordyceps are two mushrooms that have been shown to have adaptogenic properties, which means they can help the body cope with stress and anxiety. By regulating cortisol levels, which is the hormone that the body produces in response to stress, these mushrooms can help reduce the negative effects of stress on the body. Reishi contains triterpenes, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-stress effects. These compounds have been found to reduce the levels of cortisol in the body, which can help to reduce stress and anxiety. Similarly, cordyceps contains cordycepin and adenosine, which have been shown to reduce cortisol levels and improve the body's stress response. By regulating the body's stress response, cordyceps and reishi can help to reduce the negative effects of stress on the body, improving overall mental and physical health.

Beta-glucans can help improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels. Beta-glucans have been shown to activate immune cells, reduce inflammation, and improve glucose metabolism, which can help regulate blood sugar levels.

Shiitake mushrooms also contain a compound called eritadenine, which has been shown to improve cholesterol levels and may help regulate blood sugar levels. Eritadenine is a nucleoside compound that has been shown to have a cholesterol-lowering effect by inhibiting the synthesis of cholesterol in the liver. Some studies have suggested that eritadenine may also improve glucose metabolism and help regulate blood sugar levels, making shiitake mushrooms a potentially valuable addition to a diabetes-friendly diet.

Chaga and reishi mushrooms are known to contain several compounds that can help promote cardiovascular health. Chaga mushrooms contain betulinic acid, a triterpenoid compound, which has been shown to have cholesterol-lowering effects by preventing the absorption of cholesterol in the gut. Ergosterol, another compound found in chaga, has also been shown to have cholesterol-lowering effects, helping to reduce the risk of heart disease.

Reishi mushrooms are another great source of compounds that support cardiovascular health. Triterpenes found in reishi have been shown to have cholesterol-lowering effects, helping to reduce the buildup of plaque in the arteries and the risk of heart disease. In addition to cholesterol-lowering effects, triterpenes in reishi have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Inflammation is a natural response of the body to injury or infection. However, chronic inflammation can lead to a number of health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis. Many of the mushroom extracts, including lion's mane, reishi, and chaga, contain compounds that have been shown to have potent anti-inflammatory effects. For example, lion's mane contains erinacines and hericenones, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and may help reduce inflammation in the brain. Reishi contains triterpenes, which have also been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, and may help reduce inflammation throughout the body. Chaga contains betulinic acid, which has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and may help reduce inflammation in the gut. Additionally, ergothioneine found in oyster mushrooms has been shown to have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and may help reduce oxidative stress and inflammation throughout the body.

Mushrooms contain dietary fiber and other prebiotic compounds that can help to nourish the gut microbiome. Prebiotics are indigestible fibers that stimulate the growth and activity of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which in turn can improve digestive health. In addition polysaccharides and other compounds found in mushrooms have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects and may help reduce inflammation in the gut. This can be particularly helpful for individuals with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a group of conditions that cause chronic inflammation in the digestive tract. Finally Shiitake mushrooms, have been shown to have antimicrobial properties that may help protect against harmful bacteria and fungi in the gut. One compound in particular, lentinan, has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against a variety of pathogens, including Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus. Lentinan works by interfering with the formation of bacterial and fungal cell walls, ultimately leading to their destruction.

Recent studies have shown that cordyceps may have beneficial effects on lung function, making it a potentially helpful supplement for respiratory health. One study found that cordyceps improved oxygen uptake in healthy older adults during exercise, suggesting that it may help improve lung function and endurance. In addition, cordyceps has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects, which may be helpful in managing conditions that involve airway inflammation, such as asthma.

Beta-glucans have been shown to help improve skin hydration and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. These compounds work by promoting collagen production in the skin, which helps to maintain its elasticity and firmness. In addition, antioxidants found in mushrooms can help protect the skin from damage caused by free radicals and environmental stressors. Antioxidants help to neutralize free radicals, which can cause oxidative stress and damage to the skin reducing inflammation, redness, and premature aging.

Mushroom compounds such as eritadenine, have been shown to have liver-protective effects by reducing the buildup of fat in the liver and improving liver function. Likewise mushrooms are rich in triterpenes, which have been shown to have liver-protective effects by reducing inflammation and promoting the regeneration of liver cells. Additionally, polysaccharides have been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects that may further support liver health. These compounds work by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the liver, which can help protect against liver damage and promote healthy liver function.

chaga and cordyceps have been found to possess antimicrobial and antiviral properties that make them effective in fighting off infections caused by bacteria, viruses, and fungi. In particular, chaga has been shown to have antiviral effects against a wide range of viruses, including herpes simplex virus and influenza virus. This antiviral activity has been attributed to compounds like betulinic acid, ergosterol peroxide, and polysaccharides present in chaga extract. Cordyceps has also been shown to have antiviral and antibacterial properties. The active compounds in cordyceps that are responsible for these effects include cordycepin and adenosine. These compounds are able to disrupt the replication of viruses and bacteria, inhibiting their ability to spread and cause infections. Additionally, some mushroom extracts like chaga have been found to have broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, which means they can be effective against a wide range of bacteria and fungi.

    Product FAQs

Polysaccharides are complex carbohydrates found in various species of mushrooms among other plants. They are composed of long chains of simple sugars, such as glucose, linked together and can have various molecular structures and functions.

Polysaccharides are an important source of energy for the body and help to regulate blood sugar levels. They also help to promote healthy digestion, as they can increase the amount of good bacteria in the gut, leading to improved gut health. Polysaccharides are also believed to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which can help to reduce the risk of chronic diseases, such as heart disease and certain types of cancer.

In addition, some types of polysaccharides, such as beta-glucans, have been shown to have immune-boosting properties and may help to protect against infection and illness.

Each mushroom extract has been standardised to contain 30% polysaccharides. For example in the case of our muhsroom complex, each capsule contains 600mg of blended mushroom extracts, of this 600mg 30% is polysaccharides, in this case 30% of 600mg is 180mg, so each capsule contains 180mg of polysaccharides.

Our blend contains equal amounts (75mg) of the following organic mushroom extracts:

    • Lions Mane
    • Chaga
    • Reishi
    • Cordyceps
    • Shiitake
    • Maitake
    • Oyster
    • Cropinus

Not all mushroom extracts are created equal - cheap mushroom extracts are unfortunately frequently mixed with starch. From here the corresponding lab tests to verify the polysaccharide content are innacurate as it is very difficult to distinguish from high-quality polysaccharides and simple starch. This explains why some lower-quality and cheaper products display a content of up to 50% polysaccharides.

A further popular method of producing cheap quality mushroom products is to grow the mushrooms on a wood and straw mixture or millet and to pulverise the complete mushroom culture (including roots, straw, wood and millet) once the fruiting bodies have finished growing. In this case the polysaccharide values are falsly inflated. What’s more, such products primarily consist of wood and straw, with little health benefits.

Our mushrooms only use the fruiting body - the part of the mushroom visible above ground, and the rest of the roots and growing medium is discarded. This ensures the proportion of polysaccharides shown in our products is the pure proportion of mushroom-typical polysaccharides – called beta-glucans.

Our mushrooms are grown on organic farms in rural China (Fujian and Jiangxi provinces), in their native habitat. Farmers here have been cultivating mushrooms for centuries in outdoor mushroom farms using wood and soil as their growing medium. We specifically choose to source our mushrooms from China. European grown mushrooms are often grown in cardboard susbtrate in indoor laboratories under artificial conditions which we believe severly inhibits their nutritional profile. We do however process our mushroom extracts in Germany before importing the finished extracts to the UK for encapsulation.
